At least one Turkish soldier was killed and two others were injured during a Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) attack on their military convoy in the country’s Kurdish-populated southeast.
Siirt Governor Ali Fuat Atik told Anadolu Agency that the attack took place after the army vehicle left a military base in Cukurca district.
Elsewhere in Sirnak province, the Turkish army claimed it had carried out airstrikes against the PKK guerrillas in the area and killed six.
Country’s interior ministry claimed in an earlier press release that the military operations against the Kurdish forces had killed 26 guerrillas over the past week. According to the statement, 14 others had surrendered to the Turkish forces.
The Turkish army and PKK have been clashing for over three decades. The latest ceasefire collapsed in July 2015 when the PKK, after two years, resumed its attacks on the Turkish troops across southeastern Turkey.
